Re: ABC TV – Foreign Correspondent Program on Turkey and the Armenian Genocide – “Turkey – Facing up to the Past”
Dear ANC Australia Grassroots Members and Friends,
We call upon your urgent response with regard to this matter.
Background:
* Yesterday evening ABC TV broadcast on its Foreign Correspondent Program, as its lead story a report by David Hardaker titled “Turkey – Facing up to the Past”* The story highlights the Turkish State’s persecution of leading Turkish citizens, such as the famous writer Orhan Pamuk, who was recently charged for “insulting the Turkish Nation” for merely acknowledging that 1 million Armenians were killed by the (Ottoman) Turks.
* For an abstract of the story go to http://www.abc.net.au/foreign/content/2006/s1576063.htm
* (the report will also be replayed on ABC (free to air) on Saturday 4 March 2006, and ABC2 Digital TV Thursday 2 March 2006 at 8:35 am, 4:00pm, 7:00pm and 9:15pm)
Action Required:

We set out below for your guide and reference the following note left by the ANC Australia:
Congratulations to the ABC’s Foreign Correspondent program and David Hardaker for exposing the systematic denial of human rights in Turkey. The Turkish Government’s behaviour towards Orhan Pamuk shows the attitude with which it approaches the issue of freedom of speech and in particular the Armenian Genocide.
Turkey must come to terms with the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide and its continued and present denial over the past 91 years. Only when the Turkish Government accepts responsibility and faces the consequences of its inhumane actions, can it pave the way toward its rightful place in the European family of nations and become an equal & valued member of the World community.
Thank you for this very important programming. It is through programs like these, raising public awareness that will see Turkey accepting its past, changing its present stance and moving towards a humane and democratic society
